Think twice before abandoning Xorg. Wayland breaks everything!

Hence, if you are interested in existing applications to "just work" without the need for adjustments, then you may be better off avoiding Wayland.

Wayland solves no issues I have but breaks almost everything I need. Even the most basic, most simple things (like xkill) - in this case with no obvious replacement. And usually it stays broken, because the Wayland folks mostly seem to care about Automotive, Gnome, maybe KDE - and alienating everyone else (e.g., people using just an X11 window manager or something like GNUstep) in the process.


As 2024 is winding down:

For the record, even in the latest Raspberry Pi OS you still can't drag a file from inside a zip file onto the desktop for it to be extracted. So drag-and-drop is still broken for me.

And Qt move() on a window still doesn't work like it does on all other desktop platforms (and the Wayland folks think that is good).

And global menus still don't work (outside of not universally implemented things like qt_extended_surface set_generic_property).


The Wayland project seems to operate like they were starting a greenfield project, whereas at the same time they try to position Wayland as "the X11 successor", which would clearly require a lot of thought about not breaking, or at least providing a smooth upgrade path for, existing software.

In fact, it is merely an incompatible alternative, and not even one that has (nor wants to have) feature parity (missing features). And unlike X11 (the X Window System), Wayland protocol designers actively avoid the concept of "windows" (making up incomprehensible words like "xdg_toplevel" instead).

DO NOT USE A WAYLAND SESSION! Let Wayland not destroy everything and then have other people fix the damage it caused. Or force more Red Hat/Gnome components (glib, Portals, Pipewire) on everyone!

Please add more examples to the list.

Wayland seems to be made by people who do not care for existing software. They assume everyone is happy to either rewrite everything or to just use Gnome on Linux (rather than, say, twm with ROX Filer on NetBSD).

Edit: When I wrote the above, I didn't really realize what Wayland even was, I just noticed that some distributions (like Fedora) started pushing it onto me and things didn't work properly there. Today I realize that you can't "install Wayland", because unlike Xorg, there is not one "Wayland display server" but actually every desktop envrironment has its own. And maybe "the Wayland folks" don't "only care about Gnome", but then, any fix that is done in Gnome's Wayland implementation isn't automatically going to benefit all users of Wayland-based software, and possibly isn't even the implementation "the Wayland folks" would necessarily recommend.

Edit 12/2023: If something wants to replace X11 for desktop computers (such as professional Unix workstations), then it better support all needed features (and key concepts, like windows) for that use case. That people also have displays on their fridge doesn't matter the least bit in that context of discussion. Let's propose the missing Wayland protocols for full X11 feature parity.

Wayland is broken by design

  • A crash in the window manager takes down all running applications
  • You cannot run applications as root
  • You cannot do a lot of things that you can do in Xorg by design
  • There is not one /usr/bin/wayland display server application that is desktop environment agnostic and is used by everyone (unlike with Xorg)
  • It offloads a lot of work to each and every window manager. As a result, the same basic features get implemented differently in different window managers, with different behaviors and bugs - so what works on desktop environment A does not necessarily work in desktop environment B (e.g., often you hear that something "works in Wayland", even though it only really works on Gnome and KDE, not in all Wayland implementations). Apparently the Wayland project doesn't even want to be "X.org 2.0", and doesn't want to provide a commonly used implementation of a compositor that could be used by everyone: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland/wayland/-/issues/233. Yet this would imho be required if they want to make it into a worthwile "successor" that would have any chance of ever fixing the many Wayland issues at the core.

Wayland breaks screen recording applications

  • MaartenBaert/ssr#431 ❌ broken since 24 Jan 2016, no resolution ("I guess they use a non-standard GNOME interface for this")
  • https://github.com/mhsabbagh/green-recorder ❌ ("I am no longer interested in working with things like ffmpeg/wayland/GNOME's screencaster or solving the issues related to them or why they don't work")
  • vkohaupt/vokoscreenNG#51 ❌ broken since at least 7 Mar 2020. ("I have now decided that there will be no Wayland support for the time being. Reason, there is no budget for it. Let's see how it looks in a year or two.") - This is the key problem. Wayland breaks everything and then expects others to fix the wreckage it caused on their own expense.
  • obsproject/obs-studio#2471 ❌ broken since at least 7 Mar 2020. ("Wayland is unsupported at this time", "There isn't really something that can just be easily changed. Wayland provides no capture APIs")
  • There is a workaround for OBS Studio that requires a obs-xdg-portal plugin (which is known to be Red Hat/Flatpak-centric, GNOME-centric, "perhaps" works with other desktops)
  • phw/peek#1191 ❌ broken since 14 Jan 2023. Peek, a screen recording tool, has been abandoned by its developerdue to a number of technical challenges, mostly with Gtk and Wayland ("Many of these have to do with how Wayland changed the way applications are being handled")

As of February 2024, screen recording is still broken utterly on Wayland with the vast majority of tools. Proof

Workaround: Find a Wayland compositor that supports the wlr-screencopy-unstable-v1 protocol and use wf-recorder -a. The default compositor in Raspberry Pi OS (Wayfire) does, but the default compositor in Ubuntu doesn't. (That's the worst part of Wayland: Unlike with Xorg, it always depends on the particular Wayand compositor what works and what is broken. Is there even one that supports everything?)

Wayland breaks screen sharing applications

  • jitsi/jitsi-meet#2350 ❌ broken since 3 Jan 2018
  • jitsi/jitsi-meet#6389 ❌ broken since 24 Jan 2016 ("Closing since there is nothing we can do from the Jitsi Meet side.") See? Wayland breaks stuff and leaves application developers helpless and unable to fix the breakage, even if they wanted.

NOTE: As of November 2023, screen sharing in Chromium using Jitsi Meet is still utterly broken, both in Raspberry Pi OS Desktop, and in a KDE Plasma installation, albeit with different behavior. Note that Pipewire, Portals and whatnot are installed, and even with them it does not work.

Wayland breaks automation software

This is an X11 application, and as such will not function 100% on 
distributions that default to using Wayland instead of Xorg.

In my opinion this is a showstopper for running a Wayland session." However, there is a workaround: "AppImages which ship just the XCB plugin will automatically fallback to running in xwayland mode" (see below).

Wayland does not work properly on NVidia hardware?

Apparently Wayland relies on nouveau drivers for NVidia hardware. The nouveau driver has been giving unsatisfactory performance since its inception. Even clicking on the application starter icon in Gnome results in a stuttery animation. Only the proprietary NVidia driver results in full performance.

Update 2024: The situation might slowly be improving. It remains to be seen whether this will work well also for all existing old Nvidia hardware (that works well in Xorg).

Server-side window decorations are what make the title bar and buttons of all windows on a system consistent. They are a must have_ for a consistent system, so that applications written e.g., Gtk will not look entirely alien on e.g., a Qt based desktop, and to enforce that developers cannot place random controls into window titles where they do not belong. Client-side decorations, on the other hand, are destroying uniformity and consistency, put additional burden on application and toolkit developers, and allow e.g., GNOME developers to put random controls (that do not belong there) into window titles (like buttons), hence making it more difficult to achieve a uniform look and feel for all applications regardless of the toolkit being used.

Red Hat employee Matthias Clasen ("I work at the Red Hat Desktop team... I am actually a manager there... the people who do the actual work work for me") expicitly stated "Client-side everything" as a principle, even though the protocol doesn't enforce it: "Fonts, Rendering, Nested Windows, Decorations. "It also gives the design more freedom to use the titlebar space, which is something our designers appreciate" (sic). Source

Apparently Wayland (at least as implemented in KWin) does not respect EWMH protocols, and breaks other command line tools like wmctrl, xrandr, xprop, etc. Please see the discussion below for details.

Wayland requires JWM, TWM, XDM, IceWM,... to reimplement Xorg-like functionality

As it currently stands minor WMs and DEs do not even intend to support Wayland given the sheer complexity of writing all the code required to support the above features. You do not expect JWM, TWM, XDM or even IceWM developers to implement all the featured outlined in ^1.

xclip is a command line utility that is designed to run on any system with an X11 implementation. It provides an interface to X selections ("the clipboard"). Apparently Wayland isn't compatible to the X11 clipboard either.

This is another example that the Wayland requires everyone to change components and take on additional work just because Wayland is incompatible to what we had working for all those years.

Wayland breaks SUDO_ASKPASS

X11 atoms can be used to store information on windows. For example, a file manager might store the path that the window represents in an X11 atom, so that it (and other applications) can know for which paths there are open file manager windows. Wayland is not compatible to X11 atoms, resulting in all software that relies on them to be broken until specifically ported to Wayland (which, in the case of legacy software, may well be never).

Possible workaround (to be verified): Use the (Qt proprietary?) Extended Surface Wayland protocol casually mentioned in https://blog.broulik.de/2016/10/global-menus-returning/ "which allows you to set (and read?) arbitrary properties on a window". Is it the set_generic_property from https://github.com/qt/qtwayland/blob/dev/src/extensions/surface-extension.xml?

Wayland breaks games

Games are developed for X11. And if you run a game on Wayland, performance is subpar due to things like forced vsync. Only recently, some Wayland implementations (like KDE KWin) let you disable that.

Other platforms (Windows, Mac, other destop environments) can set the window position on the screen, so all cross-platform toolkits and applications expect to do the same on Wayland, but Wayland can't (doesn't want to) do it.

Control freaks, running primarily tiling WMs, but also some other WMs with builtin window resizing/placement logic and accompanying EWMH-based tools, thought they know better how windows on their screens should be organized, and this was often breaking clients which didn't expect such aggressive WMs.

By the way, GIMP/Lazarus multi-window interface perfectly suits tiling WM, but it also need some API on WM side so application can describe desired tiling layout. WM itself can't do good decisions about window positions/layout without hints from application. It will be some random mess.

Given the fact I SIGCONT/SIGSTOP X clients a lot in a daily manner, keeping some of them suspended for days, that's a +1 reason why Wayland is totally unacceptable for me. I have already experienced similar issues when partially suspending multi-process apps like Thunderbird which rely on IPC a lot: the messages to suspended process in non-suspended ones keep accumulating and cause an inevitable growth of memory consumption.

Lol, so curl is implementing a browser and should talk to a full-fledged browser engine instead of implementing the networking stuff itself?

Window managers manage windows of arbitrary clients, rather than of a certain client, that's the key difference.

Application can be extended to use tiling protocol if available. If not available, use absolute positioning. Or maybe even better: introduce new window placement constraint protocol that can describe for example 2 windows should be tiled horizontally and third window should be tiled vertically above previous 2 windows. This can be implemented both for tiling and stacking window managers.

By the way, I found a critical problem in applications with CSD, which for some reason is not discussed. If the application suddenly hangs up, you can't close, move or minimize it, etc., if it's a CSD application, because the toolbar where the buttons are located will also hang up. In applications with windows manager (SSD) this problem doesn't exist, because the toolbar with the buttons is a separate application that communicates with the client application.

@Monsterovich false assumption: it was discussed a lot long time ago, and Mutter even has some mitigations for it providing basic window operations for frozen CSD windows.

:/ Interesting. Following the issue, the last comment says that applying a MR patch seems to fix the issue (and seems to be copied the fix done in X some time ago). Probably it's not a final solution but seems like it's relatively close to a fix.

Every time I consider trying Wayland or a different DE, I find a post like this and it helps me avoid needlessly complicating my life. Thanks! @probonopd

Honestly, if XFCE isn’t implementing it I don’t really care much, because XFCE has always been rocksolid for me and nothing else even compares. Other DEs all want to force their opinions on me or they’ve copied some brain-dead Macintosh OS 🤮accoutrements, so they can all just suck off. Also, CSD is 100% garbage. I don’t trust anyone who’s pushing that.

Almost all freedesktop stuff are some brain-dead copies of concepts alien to the UNIX way. Including the X11, which is why it gains a lot of critics (which doesn't justify Wayland though, as it's even shittier for the matter). Way too many people, including those with big money, see GNU/Linux (and sometimes *BSDs) just as a mature free platform, as opposed to dumb stuff like ReactOS or Android-x86, and don't give a shit about the individuality of UNIX-like systems, instead just sculpting and mimicking whatever alien things they want to compete with. This descends way back into the time of IBM CUA which affected virtually every popular modern desktop.

Software for UNIX-like systems is based very deeply on concepts of three default file descriptors (stdin/stdout/stderr), and more non-standardized file descriptors if needed. But they stand totally opposed to the graphical world. The maximum integration there is piping stdout into some graphical util, like in xclip, dmenu, or display utility from ImageMagick. And even that has zero semantical connection with the terminal from which it started.

Windoze ports of software for UNIX-like systems often solve this by launching a separate CMD window, besides of a graphical one, or redirect stdout/stderr to a log file. On UNIX-like systems, users are expected instead to manually launch the graphical software from some terminal emulator if they need to (and fancy new Snap/Flatpak/AppImage shit, as well as other alien stuff creating .desktop files on installation with long obscure commands makes this much more complicated). Both approaches bite.

There are two better approaches to solve this. One is revolutionary: introduce graphics into the text. Possibly even into the kernel framebuffer console, so some character cells are used for text and other ones are used for graphics. But given the chaotic nature of the UNIX character-based terminals, which are easy to ruin just by printing from two streams simultaneously, it's gonna be a disaster. And bringing the concept of block-based terminals, well known for users of IBM operating systems, would be just another alien thing. It's also possible to just decorate TUI apps and make them more pleasant for lame users just by replacing pseudographics with graphic sprites (it works well for rogue-like games, so why not try for other kinds of apps? I bet in modern terminal emulators it's possible to achieve just with TTF fonts, with zero changes in the apps and TUI toolkits, and without introducing support for flaky things like Sixel :P)

Another, evolutionary one, is to make the terminal a first-class citizen in a graphical environment. I think for years for just a possibility to flip any window and see some controls behind instead, like users of CRT TVs in 80s accessed unimportant controls at the rear, or pulled a channel switch box and tuned individual channels there:

Just a decade ago this idea could still be met with objections like "hey, app ≠ window, apps can have many windows, no 'main' window, or even zero of them", but c'mon, it's an era of single-window apps already, even macOS which kept the idea of always persistent menubar, as opposed to non-persistent windows, has surrendered to this :P Bringing a config window for any app in a generic manner would be a complicated thing, but why not just flip ANY window and get a corresponding terminal behind it, huh?

It would also solve another important thing. On Windows, when an app crashes, you get an annoying window like:

And what happens on GNU/Linux? Poof, it just suddenly disappears, possibly without even being noticed. Yeah, there are crutches like drkonqi, which works for KDE apps only, but that's not a solution. And what if a developer wants a backtrace? Should they make a builtin debugger in the program (like in Mozilla apps), or just let the users suffer with getting familiar with bloated gdb and its obscure commands? Both approaches bite, again. The corpse of a window should just stay there and provide some post-mortem info (heuristically, it's possible to omit this if the exit code is 0 and nothing was printed to stdout/stderr recently). And when I'm done with it, I may just hit it with a hammer my cursor turned into, and look how it breaks into pieces :P

An adequate solution? I suppose going on with a reference Wayfire plugin for the start should do well (possibly it would be needed to fork and extend Wayfire too though).

  • An obvious limitation there is that apps which were launched outside of the means of a compositor wouldn't be controlled this way. GNOME/KDE have went through this (for the sake of fancy app launch effects) long ago, and failed. Both X11 and Wayland were designed with an idea of possibility to just launch an app from a separate terminal with a few environment variables. It should be respected, of course, with a scary fallback message like "sorry, this window is controlled remotely", but a Wayland protocol to achieve handing the file descriptors over to a compositor from an external launcher should be made too. (Possibly even a kernel module to intercept fork/exec of graphical apps? ×D)
  • A terminal emulator for the matter should be replaceable from the very start, so the users may pick any one they like, just like X11 WMs.
  • Tying the file descriptors to the compositors reduces the robustness: if the compositor or even just this plugin goes down, the clients launched like that should crash too. But what if this solution is integrated with a separate terminal multiplexing daemon, which would stay there even if the compositor has been crashed, terminated or replaced? X11 had it possible from the start, but in practice almost all clients crash if the X11 server goes down. (And I have actually already resorted to a similar solution by launching almost all X11 clients in tmux, but it's barely usable with no WM integration.)

Oh, and think about the app startup also. Every window may be turned the terminal side front by default, and then automatically flip when the graphical window appears. This eliminates a need for fancy splash screens (many apps lack them already). Thus the user sees how things are going (users really hate not knowing what happens and if something happens at all, even if the rows make 0 information for them). It would look just as cool as the boot process (if it is not concealed with some fancy non-informative shit, like Plymouth, or Android boot animation). Bonus: you get a c00l h4(kZ0r desktop for free ×D (Kali would adopt this first! ×DDDDDDD)

And what if a developer wants a backtrace? Should they make a builtin debugger in the program (like in Mozilla apps), or just let the users suffer with getting familiar with bloated gdb and its obscure commands? Both approaches bite, again.

All these error message boxes on MS Windows are absolutely useless. The "segmentation fault at address 0x123456" in memory doesn't tell the developer anything. To catch the error even in Windows you have to integrate a debugger into the application and you have to bundle debugging symbols to see in which line the crash occurred. By the way, on Linux errors are written to the kernel log and can be viewed via dmesg. But like I said, without proper debugging, you won't be able to catch the error.

The article is very biased and contains many inaccuracies, like that
that Windows can run on anything... well, for starters, the kernels of
Windows 8.1+ require CMPXCHG16b (x86-64-v2), so there's many CPUs
released up to 2013 that can't even run it.

On top of that a lot of the criticism also applies to any other
OS, including MS Windows.

Applications that deal with low level stuff definitely need adapting
more often than not, but that's universal and a minority.

E.g. try to run something that deals with Windows' GUI internals, say
Stardock WindowBlinds 3.4 (2002), which is comparable to applications
having problems with Wayland, and see by yourself how it doesn't work
on any modern Windows version.

Dealing with changing ABIs requires a lot of R&D, there's no way around
that, and you can't blame others just because your expectations weren't
backed by anything...

OTOH, abandonware requires maintenance, that's universal, and there's
very little financial support for it on GNU/Linux; yet, I just took a
random abandoned application and compiled it on a modern distro:

fdm-0.2.2 on 2022 SMGL

That's 20+ years old (just like WindowBlinds 3.4) GTK+ 1.2 software,
and it didn't require any modifications to the source code (even when
compiled against musl instead of glibc).

I'm pretty sure it could also run fine if it were a precompiled
version provided you have the 32 bit libraries installed.

We can still run a lot of extremely old native software on Wayland
just fine. We do have an exceptional compatibility record, specially

If you didn't notice, my whole stance started from criticizing brain-dead copies. We shouldn't just mimick other systems, we should take their experience into account and do better.

Yeah, and they're bloated, but having even just the source file name and a vague description of the bug is often enough, especially if the project is well-structured. Also, it's not needed if the user makes a memory dump which the developers can then inspect with debugging symbols installed (which has security implications, of course).

This applies only to kernel-level messages. And surprise! — Windows has such a log too, there's a viewer for it in the "Administration" section of the Control Panel. Moreover, it persists even between reboots, AFAIR, unlike the dmesg log (though in some distributions dmesg is duplicated to a log file).

I probably mentioned it in the thread already, but the ongoing breakage of such tools is one of the key reasons I avoid modern Windows versions and migrated to GNU/Linux as a main system eventually. In particular, because of WDDM, UAC, and a trend to restrict the possibility to modify the system files, even for admin users.

WDDM is pretty close to Wayland in its idea, BTW. Still I appreciate the resilience it introduces. I know numerous people with ol' office-tier workhorses, having buggy GPU drivers, or even hardware issues in their GPU, who benefit a lot from it: their tens of windows (y'know, for work) survive just well, and the crashes don't interrupt their work for a long time, just a flash of graphics degradation (okay, some GPU-dependent apps may break). And I'm proud that my system survives Compiz crashes (which happen often on low free RAM) just that well, unlike the systems of complacent bigots who are sure that Wayland "just works" for them.

You don't need maintenance if you use abandonware among other abandonware on a rotten hardware :P

Without debug information there won't even be the name of the file where the error occurred, even the names of the functions will be obfuscated. Dump files are rarely used in practice. The problem is that private information can be stolen from the dump file, as you have already mentioned. In addition, the dump file can be very large depending on memory consumption. You can't mail it to a developer, unlike a stack trace. Anyway, without debug symbols, the dump file is of little help to the developer, because everything is obfuscated.

Wayland breaks compatibility X11 in some Qt GUI + Appimage Apps returning egl_bad_alloc in some drivers with xcb plugin for X11 but working under Wayland.
If disable Wayland Code working in X11 can't dynamic in both X11/wayland in the same AppImage.

It's not about time at all, even though it's been more than ten years since Wayland appeared. Development is impossible because you've already been told a hundred times that there won't be any features and that they don't need it in GNOME, so you don't need it. The Wayland architecture is already established, but it is ugly and unsuitable for the desktop, so it cannot fully replace Xorg. Except perhaps Wayland may be useful in particular cases, like the development of terminals with a monolithic architecture, like game consoles or ATMs, etc.

The bottom tweet (be it irony or not) pretty much summarizes what is wrong with the Wayland way of thinking. In Unix, the different layers and components of the system are independent of each other. E.g., a window manager should not favor particular file systems, init systems, desktop environments, packaging systems, or vendors.

AnyDesk doesn't support Wayland, which doesn't mean it's broken. Something being broken means that it used to work, but doesn't work anymore. AnyDesk never had Wayland support. Therefore, it makes no sense to use it with Wayland and to say "oh, it doesn't work, it's broken".

That's why they say "not supported" on your screenshot, not "broken".

AnyDesk also never had support for most CPU architectures besides x86 and a couple of others. Would it be smart to post a comment somewhere saying the following?

Hey, I now use this CPU, but it breaks Anydesk!

No, that would be dumb. That's the same with Wayland.

AnyDesk was working before Wayland entered the scene. If Wayland can't run all applications that were developed for X11, then it should not suggest to be a successor of, but rather than an incompatible alternative for, Xorg.
