$ sudo curl -sS https://getcomposer.org/installer | sudo php | |
$ sudo mv composer.phar /usr/local/bin/composer | |
$ sudo ln -s /usr/local/bin/composer /usr/bin/composer | |
then you can run | |
$ sudo composer install |

I'm on AMI Linux 2 and I got:
To initialize a project, please create a composer.json file as described in the https://getcomposer.org/ "Getting Started" section
when I ran
sudo composer install
